Music Curriculum

8th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will compose more complex pieces of music and make connections between present day music and fundamental American musical genres.

FA.8M.1 Students will analyze and compare a cover song to its original, describing the stylistic differences and the possible reasons for each change.
FA.8M.2

Students will analyze the music of a variety of composers of non-classical music and choose two composers with similarities (age, nation of origin, preferred musical style) to compare and contrast.

FA.8M.3

Students will investigate the history and structure of jazz music.

FA.8M.4

Students will perform a selection of appropriate vocal and instrumental music, in large and small groups, from a variety of cultures and traditions, including at least one student-composed piece and one student-selected piece.

FA.8M.5

Students will examine Hip-Hop music, identifying and analyzing its historical roots, its role in historical and social movements, and its impact on American society.

FA.8M.6

Students will improvise and compose basic instrumental works using a variety of scales and modes, on both pitched and unpitched instruments.

FA.8M.7

Using a digital audio workstation (DAW), students will create a musical work in standard pop song form.
