Music Curriculum

7th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will investigate the history of music in American protest movements and examine the intersection of music and drama in musical theater.

FA.7M.1 Students will discuss and explore musical theater, differentiating between the structure and makeup of musical theater throughout history and analyzing musical theater's role in influencing and reflecting various historical and social movements.

Students will analyze the music of a variety of composers and choose one composer from a teacher-supplied list to research more thoroughly.

FA.7M.3

Students will investigate simple pieces of music on the grand staff, analyzing their stylistic elements, such as tonality, timbre, texture, and structure.

Students will perform a selection of appropriate vocal and instrumental music, in large and small groups, from a variety of cultures and traditions, including at least one student-composed piece.

FA.7M.5

Students will identify and analyze their musical and lyrical structure and connect the American history of protest songs with its modern day incarnations, through the study of the history and function of protest songs.

FA.7M.6

Students will improvise and compose basic instrumental works and perform well known songs on pitched instruments, specifically the ukulele.

Students will create a musical work that draws inspiration from a work of art or literature, using a digital audio workstation (DAW).
