Music Curriculum

5th Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will analyze the musical traditions of the world and will explore the connections between music, art, and composition.

FA.5M.1 Students will analyze and connect different world musical traditions, comparing and contrasting the form and function of different instrumental, melodic, and rhythmic elements.
FA.5M.2

Students will analyze the music of a variety of composers, making connections between the composers’ music and their chronological place in music history.

FA.5M.3

Students will improvise and compose, using standard and non-standard notation, musical and rhythmic phrases in various forms (to include theme and variations) using dotted eighth/sixteenth notes, triplets, and mixed meter.

Students will perform a selection of appropriate vocal and instrumental music, in large and small groups, from a variety of cultures and traditions.

FA.5M.5

Students will explore how music and the visual arts interconnect and inspire each other and demonstrate conducting patterns in various meters, through the study and analysis of a standard orchestral work. 

FA.5M.6

Students will identify and discuss the function of stylistic and theoretical elements of music, through analysis and performance of various classroom songs.

FA.5M.7

Students will improvise and compose, using standard notation, including various ostinati and borduns using a variety of classroom instruments.
