Music Curriculum

3rd Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will engage in the practice and preparation of music, with guidance, on the recorder and master more complicated folk and cultural dances.

FA.3M.1 Students will play a basic pentatonic scale (D, E, G, A, B), improvised, and written music on a soprano recorder with proper technique.
FA.3M.2 Students will move freely about the space, responding to recorded music through movement, and will make connections about the composer of the day on a historical, instrumental, and/or stylistic level.
FA.3M.3 Students will read and perform ledger line notes on the treble clef, sixteenth notes and syncopated rhythms, both on syllables and numerically.
FA.3M.4 Students will perform a selection of age and range-appropriate pieces from various cultures and traditions, both vocally and instrumentally.
FA.3M.5 Students will discuss ways music can tell a story, perform extended dynamics and perform and conduct in duple meter (simple and compound), through the analysis of a standard orchestral work.
FA.3M.6 Students will use analysis and performance of classroom songs to describe, create, and perform a do-based and la-based pentatonic scale and various do-based and la-based pentatonic songs, alone and as a canon/round/partner song.
FA.3M.7 Students will improvise and compose (with standard notation), pentatonic melodies in both rondo form and ABA form,  on both pitched and unpitched instruments.
FA.3M.8 Students will contrast different dance forms and music from different cultures and traditions, through performing folk dances.
