Music Curriculum

2nd Grade

Course Purpose:

Students will engage in aspects of standard musical notation and composition and make connections between music, culture, and dance.

FA.2M.1 Students will notate, compose, and improvise various ostinati, using standard and iconic notation, on body and instrumental percussion, using known rhythms, dotted half note/rests, and whole note/rests.

Students will analyze the instrumental makeup and historical background of a variety of works by different composers.

FA.2M.3

Students will perform notes on the treble clef, identifying the placement and function of measures and bar lines, and performing a major and minor diatonic scale with correct Curwen hand signs.

Students will prepare and perform vocally and instrumentally with limited guidance, a variety of age and range-appropriate music from various cultures and traditions.

FA.2M.5

Students will analyze a standard orchestral work to discuss ways dance and music connect and identify and conduct various dynamics and tempi from the work.

FA.2M.6

Students will create, and perform various songs on do, re, mi, sol, and la, with various stylistic elements (e.g. repeat sign, coda, question/answer song form).

Students will identify and compare, aurally and visually, the form and function of various orchestral instruments.

Students will perform circle and partner folk dances and contrast various dance forms and music from different cultures and traditions.
