Music Curriculum

1st Grade

Course Purpose:

 Students will engage in the basics of musical notation and composition on a variety of instruments, and investigate how personal choices help create musical ideas.

FA.1M.1 Students will perform and identify the beat, the rhythm, and the meter of a known song on a variety of instruments, incorporating known rhythms and half notes/rests, and verbally and visually be able to differentiate between the two.
FA.1M.2 Students will explore and analyze the form and instrumental makeup of a variety of works by different composers.
FA.1M.3 Students will improvise, compose, and perform, using both standard and non-standard notation, musical and rhythmic phrases of various lengths, including known rhythms, half note/rest, and solfege syllables (sol, mi, and la).
FA.1M.4 Students will prepare and perform, vocally and instrumentally,  a variety of age and range-appropriate music from various cultures and traditions, with guidance, for an audience of peers, friends, and families.
FA.1M.5 Students will analyze a standard orchestral work to discuss ways music can tell a story, perform extended dynamics and perform and conduct in duple meter (simple and compound)
FA.1M.6 Students will describe, create, and perform a song based on sol, mi, and la consisting of steps, leaps, and skips, either individually or as a call and response song with the teacher, through analyzing and performing various classroom songs.
FA.1M.7 Students will improvise and perform various musical phrases and forms, to include simple broken borduns and melodies using sol, mi, and la, on both pitched and unpitched instruments.
